The times they are a changin’
Bet you can’t answer this question: What do the names “F-Bomb Firetrucks” and “Bamfs” have in common?
Answer: Both are proposed names for volleyball teams at my 7-year-old grandson’s K-8 school!
I was outraged when my son told me, even though I had to ask him what Bamf means. Both he and my daughter-in-law immediately fired off angry replies to the school, and if the names aren’t changed, they’ll both be up at the school in someone’s face — probably with me right behind them.
What kind of teacher or administrator would condone names like that at school? Unless maybe they’re even more old-fashioned and naive than I am. But even I would know enough to check urbandictionary.com to find out what the names mean. And I’d be responsible enough to instantly forbid them.
We are assuming — hoping — the names were suggested by students and overlooked by school personnel. The alternative, that some teacher actually suggested such names, is just too grotesque.
Today’s kids grow up far too fast as it is and learn about the harsher side of life far too soon. Their teachers should not be a part of that.
