Death Valley’s moving rocks finally caught in the act

movingrocks1

If you’ve any interest in natural science, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of the mysterious moving rocks on Racetrack playa in Death Valley, Calif. Scientists have wondering for years how rocks scattered on the playa manage to move, as evidenced by the tracks they leave in the dried mud. Those theories that involved wind, water, and ice were close to the mark, but no one had any actual proof (ie, seeing and proving that the rocks were moving) until now:

So cool!

    • I was so excited to see this. I’ve wondered about those rocks for many years. Yep, I like the little guy at the end, too. Looks like the “horny toads” I used to catch all the time when I was little. Haven’t seen one in many years.
